报告摘要 :This talk is split into two parts. I begin with  developing models of the self-assembly of soft functional nanomaterials. Molecular self-assembly involves the use of hydrogen bonds and other noncovalent interactions between molecules to create supramolec ular structures that can function as nanomaterials for diagnostics, optical  devices and other applications. A goal for theory is to be able to predict and understand what structures will arise for any given set of conditions, and how the self-assembly can be directed so as to produce useful functional structures. Here I will describe recent studies in my group in collaboration with the Stupp and Mirkin groups at Northwestern, and with others, with the goal of making nanostructured materials with broad applications.

The second part of the talk is concerned with how to publish the results of scientific research, based on my experiences as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Physical Chemistry (JPC) during 2005-19. Success in publication starts with understanding the scope of the journal when authors choose which journals to submit to. Most journals have a statement about scope on their web page, and JPC has published a series of 20 Viewpoint articles concerning this issue, along with an editorial that shows how to think about these Viewpoint articles in selecting journals.

Impact factors have taken over the publishing business, but The Impact Factor refers to citations within a two year period, so it is a short term measure of manuscript visibility, and it is also sensitive to citation practices in different communities. This leads to huge differences between impact factors for science in different fields that are unrelated to manuscript quality.

Publication ethics issues remain an important concern in scientific publication. In this part of the talk. I will present some case studies that reveal a number of complicated situations that can arise even for what might be considered “routine publications”.

报告人简介:George C. Schatz教授1971年获得美国克拉克森大学化学学士学位,1976年在加州理工学院获得博士学位,之后在麻省理工学院做博士后,1976年加入美国西北大学化学系。2005年当选美国国家科学院院士。研究兴趣主要集中在纳米材料的光学,结构和热性质,包括等离子体纳米颗粒,等离子体超材料,DNA和肽纳米结构以及碳基材料。他对动力学过程的理论做出了极大贡献,包括气相和气相/表面反应,能量转移过程,传输现象和光化学。George C. Schatz教授出版了四本书籍以及发表了1000多篇论文,获得的奖项包括ACS的德拜奖和Langmuir奖,以及皇家化学学会的伯克和Boys-Rahman奖等。George C. Schatz教授是美国物理学会,皇家化学学会,美国化学学会和美国科学促进会的会员。
