NPU-QMUL Summer School on Composite Materials for Ph.D Candidates

NPU-QMUL Summer School on Composite Materials was held at the School of Materials Science and Engineering in Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) from August 13 to August 20, 2017. The Summer School was organized by the joint research center of NPU and QMUL. There were 13 Ph.D candidates and 14 scholars from NPU and QMUL who participated in the summer school which included ten academic presentations and one cultural presentation.

The opening ceremony was held on August 14, 2017, hosted by Prof. Feng Gao, the Director of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at NPU. Dr. Haixue Yan, the representative from QMUL, as well as representatives from NPU including Prof. Fuli Zhang, Deputy Director of the Office of International Cooperation; Prof. Xiaowei Yin, Deputy Dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering; Prof. Hongqiang Wang, Assistant to Dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering, and other participants attended the ceremony.

At the beginning of the opening ceremony, Prof. Fuli Zhang, Deputy Director of the Office of International Cooperation, gave a brief introduction about NPU and the history of collaboration between NPU and QMUL. He emphasized that the summer school is for high-level research exchange. He also mentioned that the NPU-QMUL Joint Educational Institute--Northwestern Polytechnical University Queen Mary University of London Engineering School was recently established and has been recruiting students very successfully this year. Finally, he also expressed his hope for a successful summer school.

Prof. Xiaowei Yin, Deputy Dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering at NPU, made a speech to kick off the summer school. He presented the ranking and excellent reputation of NPU; specifically highlighted the strengths of the School of Materials Science and Engineering. The summer school will not only benefits the Ph.D candidates’ research and culture exchange, but also contributes to the development of the QMUL-NPU Joint Research Center of Advanced Materials and Structure.

Dr. Haixue Yan, the representative from QMUL, concluded by declaring that the summer school is a wonderful opportunity in terms of research and education. He believes that first-class students will carry out first-class research and will surely receive international recognition for their contributions to the field of composite materials.

Ten academic presentations on dielectric functional composites, elastic functional composites, solar cell materials, super capacitor and intelligent sensor, as well as carbon fibre reinforced Ti-matrix composites were given by researchers from NPU and QMUL. In addition, a cultural presentation on Tang Dynasty cemetery mural restoration and protections was given by Dr. Wenqiang Dong who is the director of the Key Scientific Research Base of Conservation & Restoration for Murals and Materials Science, State Administration for Cultural Heritage.

Inspired by the above presentations, students were divided into three groups, focusing on different subjects chosen by themselves, helped by their mentors. They have generated new ideas on flexible stretchable wave absorbing materials, high flexible thermoelectric materials and flexible solar cell with super capacitor integrated components. The summer school successfully provided an excellent opportunity for Ph.D candidates to generate innovative ideas and exchange their understanding on different cultures.

In order to comprehend the research situation, participants also visited NPU laboratories including State Key Laboratory of Solidification Processing, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) Key Laboratory of Radiation Detection Materials and Devices, MIIT Key Laboratory of 3D Additive Manufacturing and Center for Nano Energy Materials. In addition, summer school participants were able to enjoy the city’s ancient culture by visiting the Shaanxi History Museum and Terracotta Warriors in Xi’an City.

A summary report and closing ceremony was held on August 20, 2017. Each group has made a brief summary of their own discoveries and innovations to generate active discussion and debate. Prof. Ton Peijs from QMUL said that the summer school was a meaningful and enjoyable experience in terms of education and research. He also expressed his sincere appreciation to all the participants and staff. Prof. Jinshan Li the Dean of School of Materials Science and Engineering of NPU, made his closing speech. He believed that NPU and QMUL would deepen the collaborative ties thanks to this successful summer school. He also presented his vision for the future and announced that the next summer school would be held in London in the next summer. He then gave special thanks to the organizing committee members, Dr. Haixue Yan, Dr. Han Zhang, Prof. Xiaowei Yin and Prof. Feng Gao for their hard working toorganize the summer school very well. Finally Prof. Ton Peijs and Prof. Jinshan Li presented certificates to Ph.D candidates.

We believe, Summer school served as a bridge between the Ph.D candidates from QMUL and NPU, which will lead successful collaboration for a great future in teaching and research for NPU and QMUL.
