Abstract

Selective Laser Melting (SLM) has evolved from a rapid prototyping technique towards a production technique to make geometrically complex and custom-made metallic parts. Powder bed fusion implies that successive powder layers are connected to each other by local fusion, which involves a rapid melting and solidification process. Representative microstructures of SLM processed Al-Si-Mg alloys are used to show that the thermodynamics and kinetics that govern solidification during SLM are similar to those in conventionally cast and slowly cooled parts. However, the scale at which the solidification process takes place, in combination with the very high cooling rates, make that certain phases do not form because of kinetic constraints and that the formed phases often exhibit non-equilibrium compositions. Therefore SLM specific post heat treatments are often required to optimize the mechanical properties of the parts. Examples are shown of how this can be monitored in the case of Al-Si-Mg alloys.

Biograph

Prof. Kim. Vanmeensel received his bachelor, master and PhD degree KU Leuven. He is active within the Powder Metallurgy research group and his research is focused on metal powder production and functionalization, metal-matrix composites processing and characterization as well numerical simulation of powder compaction and sintering technologies. Currently he is mainly active in the field of additive manufacturing of highly conductive metals, comprising both modified powder synthesis using gas atomization, powder modification as well as selective laser melting of copper based alloys. Prof. Vanmeensel has been involved as a researcher in several European (FP5, FP7, H2020) and Flemish (FWO, IWT) research projects. He has given 10 invited lectures on current assisted sintering technologies and selective laser melting of metals. He received the second price at the 2006 Belgian Ceramic Speech Contest. Currently, he guides 5 PhD students who work on selective laser melting (SLM) of high strength Al, highly conductive Cu and high temperature resistant Ni based metal alloy systems and on optimizing heat treatments for SLM processed metals. He has (co)-authored 93 journal publications in peer-reviewed journals resulting in a h-index of 24 (ISI Web of Knowledge) or 28 (Google Scholar).
